Our mission is to provide integrated energy solutions to our customers in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.
Our efforts to understand the environmental and social impacts of our business, our willingness to take steps to reduce or remove those impacts, and our ability to use clean, renewable hydroelectricity have made us environmental leaders in the electrical utility business in Canada.
We aspire to more. This year, BC Hydro introduces our first Triple Bottom Line Report. It builds on our seven previous environmental annual reports by adding a social and economic component. The new framework signals our intent to broaden the kind of information we provide to our stakeholders, and to measure our progress towards becoming a sustainable energy company.
BC Hydro's 1999 Triple Bottom Line Report addresses our:
- Environmental Bottom Line
We strive to anticipate and prevent adverse environmental impacts arising from our operations. Our environmental bottom line also includes commitments to produce more energy and less waste through eco-efficiencies, and to invest in developing alternative energy initiatives.
- Social Bottom Line
For much of our history we thought of ourselves as service providers. We now see ourselves as partners - with our employees, with our customers and with our stakeholders. We hope to build meaningful partnerships with everyone who has an interest in our business and how we can make it better.
- Economic Bottom Line
Focusing on economic development to create value for all British Columbians, that goes beyond pure financial gain, is an important measure of our long-term economic success. Our thinking about fiscal responsibility is broadening to include shareholder value-added, and the importance of effective governance and public support mechanisms. Without these, our long-term fiscal performance will suffer.
The TBL report is part of a process of building a shared understanding of how energy is generated and used in British Columbia. We provide it to you with an invitation to comment on the information it contains, and to join us in focusing attention across a triple bottom line.
